Expanded Portrait

For this photo, I chose the portrait of myself to edit. I placed a fish mural in the background from my downtown photos and then placed a solid color in the back of everything so that the image itself wouldn't be transparent. Then I lowered the opacity of the mural to make is look faded. Next, I added my pumice stone photo to make it have a bubble/water effect, which I also lowered the opacity of. Lastly, I attempted to blur my cutout outlines and added vignette at the end.

I found this project extremely challenging for me. I haven't used any kind of software to edit photos like this at all. I am not in love with how this turned out, but it was an incredible way to learn. I definitely learned so much during this process, so that's a win in my book! Now I have a good start for the next time I want to do something like this!

  1. I think it came together well. I think the background going with the skin on the arms really brings it together. The choice of centering it with the fish also looks balanced. Overall I think you made it blend really well almost like the photo was taken just like that.

  2. Hailey, this photo looks like it was taken in front of a fish backdrop! So, nice editing work.

  3. Great choices all around, Hailey! It's clear you put in some real time on the expanded portrait. Great technique blurring the lines and using a similar colored background to compliment the shift. I love the both real and imagined quality of the image - surreal yet stabilized by the fact that they're all photographs - the mural effect of the fish and pumice makes it something else entirely; and your expression only seems to amplify the mystery. Strong work!

  4. I really like how you edited these photos. It looks natural, like it was a backdrop. YOu did nice work. I like the colors in this as well.

  5. Centering the focal point into the artwork the way you did was a smart move, it made the photo seem like it was one piece rather than a blend of photos. The vibrant artwork draws the focal point inward.
